Why are there so few basement homes when having a basement home in a hot climate is desirable? The main excuse given is that the cost to dig a basement is very expensive and not cost effective. This might make sense except that so many people in Gilbert Arizona have swimming pools which require deep digging- especially for a diving pool. Another reason builders give for not building basements is that they run into caliche which is a hard sedimentary rock made of clay that is very difficult to dig through. Again, this seems like a silly excuse when so many people have swimming pools.
Basement homes are very desirable in Gilbert Arizona because the basement level is much cooler than the upper level(s). When you go down into the basement, there can be a 10 degree drop which makes a big difference on a hot summer day. Think of the savings on your electric bill! Basements used to be thought of as dark and dreary but many basements in Gilbert Arizona have several big windows which bring in nice natural sunlight. In fact, many basements have as much light as the upper levels of the home unless the windows are covered. The natural light is especially desirable in the Winter when the temperature is very nice!
