Many Val Vista Lakes residents were shocked that the Gilbert School Board voted to change Val Vista Lakes students to attend Gilbert High School.
Val Vista Lakes families have been loyal supporters of Highland High School since the day Highland High opened it’s doors 27 years ago in 1992.
Many Val Vista Lakes residents showed up at the Gilbert School Board meeting protesting the proposed change. Not enough seats to go around, parents and students stood in the back and along the sides of the room holding signs asking the School Board to not tear the Val Vista Lakes Community apart. Approximately 30 people spoke in favor of keeping the boundaries as is. Val Vista Lakes residents spoke about their loyalty and devotion to Highland High School and how they helped make Highland High School the great school it is today. Former students of Highland High spoke about their fond memories of growing up in Val Vista Lakes and graduating from Highland High. They have since purchased homes in Val Vista Lakes and their children now attend Highland High. Many people feel it is not fair to the many homeowners in Val Vista Lakes that purchased homes based on hopes of having their children attend Highland High School. There is open enrollment so VVL residents can apply to have their kids stay at Highland but there are no guarantees.
Many Val Vista Lakes residents are entertaining the idea of putting their children in valley Charter Schools. Arizona takes the Top 7 spots nationwide for their excellent Basis Charter Schools. Currently Gilbert property owners pay 75% of their property tax to the Gilbert Unified School District whether their children attend public schools or charter schools. All of the property tax funds are used to help the Gilbert Public Schools. None of the funds are used to help Charter Schools.
